The Eviyos prototype developed by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is the world's first hybrid LED, representing a significant advance in the smart, controllable high-resolution LEDs of the first market entry. Once the oncoming light is detected, the appropriate pixels will automatically turn off, so the driver of the oncoming vehicle will not be dazzled. The prototype was first exhibited at ISAL in Darmstadt from September 25th to 27th, 2017.
Eviyos is based on the μAFS research project, which was completed in the fall of 2016. The project involves multiple partners in the industrial sector and is coordinated by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. The prototype combines two technologies in one component: a light-emitting chip and separate pixel control electronics. This combination means that Eviyos' 1,024 pixel plus drive can be accommodated in an area of approximately 4 mm x 4 mm. The minimum luminous flux per pixel at 11 mA is 3 lm. The initial prototype can already exceed 4.6 lm per pixel. Customers can change the number of hybrid LEDs and complement traditional LEDs according to the specific requirements they need to meet.
“Like many of our products, hybrid LEDs can also help us improve our quality of life. With Eviyos, we are helping to improve road safety, driving comfort and convenience. We are proud that we can complete the research project. The first prototype was shown immediately. We are now moving further into vector production,†said Thomas Christl, marketing manager at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors.
Due to the precise control and adjustability of individual pixels, Eviyos is not only compact, powerful, but also energy efficient, because the lit pixels are exactly those that are needed.
In early 2020, Eviyos will form an independent product line offering a wider range of potential applications. In addition to smart headlights, intelligent selective pixel control technology will likely be used in more areas.
