Sharp started production of solar cells in electricity-free areas in 2010


Sharp exhibited a stand-alone solar cell system consisting of solar cells and batteries at the AfricanFair2008 in Yokohama in June. It is planned to be used in non-electric areas such as Africa, and the target is to start production in 2010. For the popularity of the system, the company believes it is necessary to adopt a different business model than the current sales method, and establish a new business model such as leasing.

This demonstration is a stand-alone solar cell system that connects EliiyPower's lithium-ion battery to Sharp's thin-film silicon solar cells. The thin film silicon type solar cell adopts a series structure, and the conversion efficiency after stabilization is 8.5%. Compared with the temperature of the crystalline silicon solar cell, the output power is reduced by 0.5% for every 1 °C increase, and the thin film silicon type is only reduced by 0.25%/°C, which is suitable for use in high temperature areas such as Africa.

In combination with local appliances, solar cells with output power of 90W and 360W are combined with lithium ion batteries with capacities of 1024Wh and 4096Wh. After the 1024Wh lithium-ion battery is fully charged, it can be used for 3 days when it is used for illumination (5 hours/day), radio (5 hours/day), and fan (2 hours/day). The 4096Wh lithium-ion battery can be maintained for 3 days while being used as illumination (4 hours/day), fan (2 hours/day), radio (2 hours/day), and refrigerator (24 hours/day).
