Recently, I am very honored to interview John Peeler, CEO of Veeco, a MOCVD manufacturer. John Peeler shared with us the trends in the LED industry and the status of Veeco.

LED chip will not overcapacity at this stage. Subsidy policy may continue until next year.
According to statistics, there were more than 300 MOCVDs in China in 2010, and now MOCVD has been improved, and the production capacity has improved. In response to concerns that some manufacturers have overcapacity of LED chips, John Peeler believes that the market supply and demand issues will depend on the development of the semiconductor lighting market. The semiconductor market is in great demand, and the current 350 to 400 furnaces are only a small part of the market and will not cause overcapacity.
Now many companies are concerned about whether the government will stop the equipment subsidy policy because it is worried about the overheated investment in the LED market. John Peeler said the government's subsidy policy is likely to continue until next year. Whether there will be new policies, Veeco is not sure.
LED epitaxial wafer size will develop to 4 inches
In view of the current small size and low yield of LED epitaxial wafers, John Peeler said that one of Veeco's main goals at this stage is to help customers improve product yield. Many customers currently use 2 inches because of the large size of sapphire. As the price of 2-inch sapphire rises, some customers will turn to 4 inches, but will move to 6 inches and 8 inches, depending on whether the price of large-size sapphire will be lowered in the future. Veeco's 2", 4", 6" products are easy to interchange, just swap the trays, the tray itself determines the size of the substrate, components and equipment do not need to be changed, the process, control and other aspects do not need to be greatly change.
MOCVD does not increase the average delivery time is 6 months
Now I am ordering a Veeco MOCVD. On average, I can get the equipment after 6 months. It is a very good customer. The delivery time can be within 6 months. Of course, it will take 9 months to encounter a special situation. John Peeler believes that MOCVD will not be out of stock. Veeco will ship an average of 40 units per quarter and 100 units in the last quarter. It is estimated that 120 units will be shipped this quarter. Veeco adheres to the philosophy of giving back to customers and hopes to win with customers. MOCVD will not and does not need to raise prices.
Process control of MOCVD will be developed towards a high degree of automation
When talking about the development trend of MOCVD in China, John Peeler believes that some time ago, raw materials are out of stock, sapphire and MO source prices have risen. This shortage is short-term. Many companies are trying to increase the stock of source materials, which will not affect the market demand for MOCVD.
The demand for MOCVD in the Chinese mainland market will increase because China is a major exporter of semiconductor lighting in addition to its own domestic demand. The main trend of MOCVD technology is: increased production capacity and reduced cost. To achieve this effect, it must be highly automated. At the same time, to reduce costs, we must find ways to reduce the consumption of raw materials and energy, such as: use MO source as little as possible, and use a thinner sapphire substrate.
The semiconductor lighting market will take off in 2011
When talking about the development of the LED industry in 2011, John Peeler believes that the LED industry is developing very fast and cannot accurately predict the scale and speed of its development. But the most important thing is how to cultivate strengths and strengths according to their own characteristics. Veeco is full of confidence in 2011, next year will be a bumper year for Veeco, not only the high order volume; there are many signs that the semiconductor lighting market will take off next year. By communicating with customers, it is very challenging for customers to talk about the price and cost of their products, and they will reach one-third of the current market next year.
In terms of LED applications, it is currently used for less illumination and is mostly used for LED backlights. The LED backlight market in South Korea is now slowing down, partly because the data predicted by Korea at the beginning of the year is too optimistic, and the market has to make some corrections. However, the backlight market is still relatively large, and probably requires more than 100 stoves. However, the semiconductor lighting market has already started, and the specific ratio is 10% or 15%.
Shanghai will build a training center to speed up the localization process
Veeco understands China's 12th Five-Year Plan and knows that the country hopes that cutting-edge core technologies will take root in China. Headquartered in Greater China, Veeco Asia Pacific will build a China Training Center (CTC) in Shanghai, mainly for customer technical support and training, which is expected to be launched in the first quarter of next year. At the same time, in the development of new technologies, as the number of device users increases, the feedback information that we can get users will also increase, and the newly developed products will be more adapted to local needs, which will speed up the localization. Users have specific needs and different countries have different needs. Based on a benign interaction with the user and a greater understanding of the customer's needs, we will work with the customer to improve it to make it easier for more customers.
Veeco Asia Expansion Plan
According to John Peeler, Veeco recently sold a testing equipment division to Bruker, Germany, and will focus on MOCVD production and R&D in the future. In addition to establishing a training center in Shanghai, Veeco will also establish a Technology Center (TTC) in Hsinchu, Taiwan, targeting the High-End Application Center and Demonstration Lab, which is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2011. Established a development center in Korea and a Korean Training Center (KDC), positioned as a world-class engineering and process development center, including equipment demonstrations and customer training, scheduled to start in the second half of 2011. Singapore will set up a supply chain center. Japan will transform from agent sales to direct sales, which is scheduled to take effect in January 2011.
