Google Announces Daydream Virtual Reality Solution Mobile Hardware Requirements Last Week

Daydream is Google's virtual reality solution launched this year, a hardware and software production standard. Google intends to turn it into a super platform like Android.

However, at the time of the I/O conference in May, Daydream did not give specific details, and the eyeglass reference design was vague. What is the phone that fits the VR glasses case with the handle? Can you use the existing phone at hand?

Google Announces Daydream Virtual Reality Solution Mobile Hardware Requirements Last Week

Google announced these hardware requirements for mobile phones last week, and it seems that the standard is set high. Google uses the words "must", "strongly recommend", and "should" in the document to distinguish the degree of standard coercion. We pick something you might understand:

(CPU) must have at least two physical cores.

Continuous performance mode must be supported, which is a new feature of Android N.

The resolution of the screen must be no less than 1080p, and Quad HD (1440p) or higher resolution screens are highly recommended.

The screen size must be between 4.7 inches and 6 inches.

The refresh rate of screen VR mode must be above 60 Hz; the gray-gray, white-black, black-white conversion display delay of the screen must be ≤3 ms. This is to control the picture delay caused by the rotation of the person's head.

The screen must support low persistence mode with a durability of ≤ 5 ms.

The phone must support Bluetooth 4.2.

As the core processor and display of the mobile VR display, the mobile phone determines whether the VR picture can be seen smoothly or clearly after wearing the glasses. Although Google wants more phones to support Daydream, this high standard is not suitable for the vast majority of Android phones on the market.

Clay Bavor, head of the Google VR division, also made it clear that existing Android devices are "impossible" to support Daydream and want to experience an upgrade.

The currently recognized Daydream devices only have two Pixel phones released this year. ZTE once said that Axon 7 equipped with Qualcomm Xiaolong 820 is also a Daydream Ready mobile phone, but then Qualcomm said that only Snapdragon 821 meets Daydream's requirements.

This kind of mobile phone will not be too much in the future. Google has also collaborated with Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, HTC, ZTE, LG and other vendors to certify models. They have not announced specific plans for the new Daydream.

On the other hand, although Google does not require an OLED screen, the above-mentioned screen delay and durability are only OLED screens. The capacity of this kind of screen is not high. According to the research institute TrendForce, there will be a serious shortage of OLED display panels in the world in 2017. The production of Samsung, the main manufacturer, is only enough for Apple. Chinese manufacturers want to follow suit and it is difficult to get the goods.

Daydream is not only a hardware standard, but an Android 7.0 operating system is also a must. It has a VR mode that, when turned on, can improve some of the phone's performance, such as reducing motion sensor latency, increasing the speed and priority of CPU renderings, and more.

With enough developers to develop apps and games for Google, users can use Daydream. This is a huge project involving all aspects and companies. To use Daydream, I am afraid I will continue to wait for a while.
