After acquiring the German commercial drone hardware company Ascending Technologies in January this year, Intel (Intel) re-launched on November 1st to announce the acquisition of another German startup MAVinci focused on commercial drone software development. Anil Nanduri, head of Intel's drone business, said Intel plans to provide computers, sensors, and communications and cloud integration for the growing UAS market. MAVinci has top-of-the-line flight planning software and dedicated mission planning software for geographic mapping, while the previously acquired Ascending Technologies has the flight intelligence technology required by UAV, plus Intel's own Aero drone and RealSense camera technology. It is expected to expand Intel's business landscape to the fields of agriculture, insurance, construction and mining.
Intel is a global chip giant, and the aggressive acquisition of drones is unusual in the industry, but Anil Nanduri said that Intel believes that drone technology has unlimited potential in both consumer and commercial markets, after acquiring Ascending Technologies and MAVinci. Intel will be able to take an absolute advantage in flight planning software algorithms and fixed-wing drone designs. UAVs can collect up to 50G of data on a single flight, helping to create demand for Intel's own processors.
