Looking at the transformation and upgrading of "Made in China" from a large aircraft

The dream of creating its own large aircraft has inspired several generations of Chinese aerospace people and even manufacturing elites to fight for it and bear fruit.

Recently, there are two exciting news about large aircraft. One was the success of the first flight of the C919 large passenger aircraft in Shanghai earlier this month, and the other was the opening of the Sino-Russian International Commercial Aircraft Company in Shanghai on May 22, the two countries will jointly Develop a new generation of remote wide-body aircraft.

Large aircraft are hailed as "flowers of industry" and "crown of manufacturing industry" and represent the level and level of comprehensive manufacturing capacity of a country. The dream of creating its own large aircraft has inspired several generations of Chinese aerospace people and even manufacturing elites to fight for it and bear fruit. However, China's large aircraft industry is still in its infancy, and there is still a large gap between the international advanced level in talent reserve, technical level, management experience, policies and regulations, etc. How to catch up as quickly as possible and lead the demonstration of the overall upgrading of China's manufacturing industry. It is necessary to continuously improve the internal and external development institutional mechanisms, the most crucial of which is the combination of independent research and development and the introduction of digestion and absorption.

First, independent research and development is the foundation of the industry. From the development of China’s large aircraft industry, we can see that the most advanced and core technology cannot be purchased, and without independent research and development, international cooperation cannot be effectively implemented. China’s independently developed “Yun10” aircraft made its first successful flight in 1980, making China the fifth country capable of producing 100 tons of aircraft after the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and France. Initially, when someone suggested to the board of directors of McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Manufacturing Company that the "MD90" aircraft was being assembled with the Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Plant, the board of directors was very arrogant. They said that the Chinese people have the ability to cooperate with them. Later, after the "Win 10" test flight was successful, they immediately changed their mind and agreed to cooperate. Later, independent research and development of "Win10" was stopped, and "MD90" did not end. In the process of developing the C919, the country set up major special projects such as aero-engines, which effectively promoted the formation of independent intellectual property rights and national brands, accelerated the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, formed industrial clusters and talented echelons, and gained valuable experience.

Second, internationalization is the only way for industrial development. If an industry wants to move to the international frontier, closing a car behind closed doors cannot. Seen from the perspective of the large aircraft industry, Airbus’s success was achieved through the innovative corporate organization system of the four European countries. They learned from the special corporate structure that France used to produce wine and jointly created Airbus. Through more than 20 years of joint efforts by multinational governments and enterprises, the United States has finally broken the monopoly of the United States in the field of large-scale civil aircraft. From the course of industrial development since China's reform and opening up, textiles, home appliances, and automobiles have all gone through the market-for-technology road, gradually developed and expanded, and finally became world-class. It is estimated that from 2023 to 2045, the total global demand for wide-body passenger aircraft will exceed 7,000, of which 10% will come from China. Making full use of the ambiguity of the international aircraft manufacturing oligopoly on the Chinese market, utilizing their competitive relationship, and giving play to the comparative advantages of a relatively complete manufacturing system in our country and abundant labor resources with high quality, establishing cooperative relationships, accelerating the pace of research and development, and seizing the commanding heights of the industry. It will also be the only way for the big aircraft industry.

Third, marketization is the fundamental guarantee for industrial prosperity. A large aircraft is not only a science and technology project. It is essentially an industrial project. The key to success is to stand the test of the market. Judging from the current system of investment and financing of the aircraft industry in China, what may be lacking is the lack of openness to private capital. Public capital may be introduced appropriately and the road of mixed ownership may be adopted to improve the efficiency and competitiveness of business decisions. Further planning and construction of a number of industrial bases, the formation of industrial chains and industrial clusters.

With the guidance of large aircrafts, it will further promote the transformation and upgrading of China's manufacturing, not only grasping spontaneous and original innovation, grasping its own brands and key core technologies, and grasping the localization of large-scale complete sets of equipment and products; The "One Belt, One Road" national strategy goes out and is introduced.
