CES2018: Qualcomm and Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, BYD

[Global Network Technology Reporter Chen Jian] At the 2018 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Qualcomm made a major announcement, revealing its collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover and Honda to integrate its technology into their 2018 vehicle models. The following year, BYD also joined the partnership, adopting Qualcomm's Xiaolong auto platform for its vehicles starting in 2019.

When people think of Qualcomm, they often associate it with smartphones and mobile processors like the Opteron. However, the company has been quietly expanding into the automotive sector, offering a range of car platforms under the Opteron name that support advanced connectivity and in-vehicle computing.

In 2017, Qualcomm won 25 design awards at CES, showcasing its growing influence in consumer tech. By 2018, the company announced its Dragon Motors platform would power the 2018 Honda Accord and future Jaguar Land Rover models. Additionally, BYD, one of China’s leading electronics manufacturers, confirmed its plan to use the Xiaolong 820A from 2019 onwards.

Qualcomm is working to bring integrated connectivity, rear-seat entertainment, and advanced telematics to modern vehicles. This includes infotainment systems, digital trunking, and enhanced navigation solutions, all aimed at meeting the evolving needs of drivers and passengers.

For Jaguar Land Rover, this means combining 4G, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi technologies through the Xiaolong 820A platform to create a fully connected vehicle. It also features Qualcomm’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), enhancing the vehicle's awareness of its surroundings. This could lead to deeper collaboration between the two companies in the development of autonomous driving technologies.

While the partnership with Jaguar Land Rover is still in early stages, the practical application of the Xiaolong Auto Platform is already visible in the 2018 Honda Accord. Qualcomm provides telematics, infotainment, and navigation systems for the Accord, along with a 4G LTE modem to support Hondalink’s vehicle connectivity features.

According to Qualcomm, these advancements are designed to deliver a more personalized and connected driving experience. The high-end Xiaolong platform also supports machine learning and Qualcomm’s neural processing engines, paving the way for smarter, more responsive vehicles.

BYD plans to integrate an infotainment and digital trunking system into its future electric vehicles, using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820A autopilot platform. This move is expected to enhance the energy efficiency of the vehicle’s electronic control system, ultimately improving performance, battery life, and driving range.

As seen in recent years, car connectivity continues to be a central theme at CES. With companies like Qualcomm pushing the boundaries of in-vehicle technology, the future of mobility looks more connected, intelligent, and user-focused than ever before.
