NXP dual tuner RF system achieves satellite set-top box integration breakthrough

NXPSemiconductors, an independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, today introduced the latest innovative silicon tuner with the industry's most integrated dual-stream RF system supporting single-cable and traditional satellite reception. The new NXP TDA20136 integrates a dual 8PSK satellite tuner with the highest level of pre-tuner circuitry, creating a single platform that can be flexibly used in a variety of installation environments without the need to replace hardware, significantly reducing design cost and complexity.

The pre-tuner circuit is designed to be flexible, allowing the set-top box to be used in different installation environments. It can be used with a single cable input, internally transmitting signals separately to the device mode, or in a traditional mode with two separate inputs. Both input modes are available with dual loop output capability.

The most common case of a single cable input setup is the use of a set top box with a single cable receiving outdoor unit (ODU). In this case, signals from multiple tuner (LNB) are multiplexed onto a single cable of the ODU. The single cable provides the required signals for multiple set top boxes of a single home or multi-dwelling unit (MDU). The set-top box using the IC can also be used in an installation mode with a conventional multi-LNB and multi-line ODU without the need to replace hardware. In this traditional installation mode, each tuner receives a signal from a separate cable.

Mr. TimKirstein of NXP Semiconductors said: "The industry's single-cable reception trend has the potential to significantly reduce installation costs because of the reduced number of cables that need to be installed, and the deployment of thyristor rectifiers (SCRs) in set-top boxes with standard satellite tuners. The circuit is both complex and expensive. Our invented TDA20136 uses the highest level of RF integration to directly address these issues; but it is also backward compatible with traditional multi-LNB and multi-mode ODU modes, providing great flexibility for set-top box manufacturers. ""

The TDA20136 system is based on NXP's proven, high performance CX24132 dual tuner technology. The unique second-generation full-size dual 8PSK tuner features high performance and low power consumption. It contains the low noise amplifier (LNA), voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), synthesizer, mixer and filter necessary for common applications. In addition, its small size (7mm x 7mm) helps system designers shrink Front end size.

Time to market

The NXP TDA20136 will be commissioned in September 2009 and will be available worldwide.
