OSRAM develops high-throughput LED prototypes with pleasant lighting

The LED prototype with high luminous efficiency, good color rendering and comfortable warm white lighting is now successfully developed in the OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Laboratory. This LED combines three important characteristics of a common lighting source: a color temperature of 3000 K, a color rendering index of 82, and a luminous efficiency of 104 lm/W.

The warm light of this warm white LED comes from advanced conversion technology, which not only produces excellent light quality, but also produces an impressive efficiency. Because warm white light is primarily intended for home lighting applications, the combination of these features allows LEDs to be more widely used in general lighting applications. Up to now, luminous efficiency of 100 lm/W or more can be achieved only in the cool white spectrum. Dr. Frank Baumann, Project Manager for Warm White LED Development at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors in Germany, said: "The combination of excellent light quality and excellent energy efficiency will enable LED technology to achieve commercial breakthroughs earlier. High luminous efficiency and comfortable and pleasant The new light source is no longer just a dream."

When the color temperature is 3000 K, the color of the LED is similar to that of the halogen lamp. The chromaticity coordinates fall on the Planckian curve, which is pure white and does not shift to the green spectral region. The new single-chip LED prototype has a chip area of only 1 mm2 and delivers 124 lm at 350 mA, which is equivalent to a luminous efficiency of 104 lm/W.
These record results are attributed to OSRAM's expertise in providing new chip architectures, as well as improvements in epitaxial processes, converter combinations and efficient packaging. OSRAM will gradually introduce new technologies in production.
