Google and IBM jointly develop servers

April 30 news, according to foreign media reports, IBM hopes that its technology is applied to Google and other Internet giant's data center is not a secret. There is now evidence that IBM's efforts have paid off.

Google local time on Monday said that the company has designed a server system motherboard, configure IBM's Power8 chip. Typically, only IBM designed hardware uses the Power series chips. Google and other cloud computing service companies use x86 chips almost without exception.

Google said that the purpose of its new motherboard development is to help adapt its software so that it can run on a computer system configured with Power8. Gordon MacKean, senior director of Google's hardware business unit, said at a conference at IBM that "for this we must develop a hardware product."

McKean is also chairman of the OpenPower Foundation. The OpenPower Foundation is an industry organization helped by IBM to find more customers for its chip technology.

McKean did not disclose whether Google will deploy Power8 technology in its business to handle Internet search or other computing loads, as well as related plans. But its efforts in the hardware and software areas show that Google is seriously considering making certain tasks no longer dependent on Intel's technology.

An Intel spokesperson Mark Miller said last week that he was skeptical of IBM's assertion that the Power8 performance is higher than Intel's. "We haven't ignored our competitors and haven't stagnated."
