Overall lighting and lamp design case of Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Scenic Area

In the fall of 2007, I was commissioned by Chengdu Shaocheng Company, the owner of Kuanzhai Alley Scenic Area, to design a nightscape lighting plan for the scenic spot. It ended in June 2008 and lasted for more than half a year. The design results were well implemented during the production and installation of the entire product. The concepts of “quiet” and “slow” were accurately reflected. Therefore, the night lighting effect of the scenic spot has been good and has been obtained from local residents. Widely recognized and praised by Chinese and foreign tourists, owners and peers. Now I have sorted out some of the principles and feelings I have gained in the design process of the case, which I will share with the industry colleagues and hope to benefit the growth of the new students.

First, the background of the scenic spot

Kuanzhai Alley Scenic Spot is one of Chengdu's famous three historical and cultural protection scenic spots (Wenshu Monastery, Daci Temple and Kuanzhai Alley). The first two scenic spots are Buddhist temples, and the Kuanzhai Alley is a residential community. It was built in the early Qing Dynasty and is complete. Keep it so far.

In 1718 (Kangxi 57 years), the Junggar Ministry harassed Tibet. After the Qing dynasty sent three thousand officers and men to quell the rebellion, they set up a general in Tuen Mun in Chengdu, and chose to stay for more than a thousand soldiers. On the basis of the original Shaocheng, the city was built with the generals as the center, and the soldiers were concentrated. The core of the city is the current wide and narrow alley scenic spot.

The Kuanzhai Alley Scenic Area consists of three east-west parallel wide lanes, narrow alleys and wells. In the Qing Dynasty, the residents are full of Mongolian soldiers and family members. The Han people are not allowed to live together. The duration is long and the management system is strict. Therefore, its scale And style can be retained for a long time;

Since the beginning of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, Manchu people have become increasingly declining. Some of the wealthy literati of the Han people began to purchase the property of Kuanzhai Alley (ie Shaocheng) and operate it for a long time in New China. Therefore, Kuanzhai Alley has always been a relatively large-scale residential group in the old Chengdu area.

The characteristics of the wide and narrow alleys are: combination of north and south, combination of Chinese and Western.

The combination of north and south refers to the organic combination of the style of the courtyard in the north and the residence in western Sichuan. The combination of Chinese and Western refers to the organic combination of Chinese architectural style and Western architectural style. Through this combination, in the folk houses of the wide and narrow alleys, you can clearly feel the leisure and charm of western Sichuan, and you can understand the bureaucratic momentum of the north, and you can also sniff out the new wind that Xixie is coming. Therefore, there is indeed an architectural museum in terms of its architectural style.

Because of the special nature of its residents, the impression that Kuanzhai Alley has left to the world for a long time is the symbol of “quietness”, “leisure” and “slowness”. The above background determines that I have established the following lighting design principles.

Second, the establishment of lighting design principles

After in-depth research and understanding, I established several major principles at the beginning of the design:

1. Because the atmosphere of the scenic spot is characterized by “quietness”, “leisure” and “slowness”, the entire lighting system must be strictly prohibited: the lighting runs, the color is complex and the brightness is strictly controlled.

2. The courtyards in the scenic spots are closely connected and the streets are not wide, which can bring "warm" to the people in the life.

The sense, therefore, I decided to choose a low color temperature warmth on the color temperature, because the warmth can not only effectively close the distance between people, but also increase the environmental sensation.

3. The houses in the scenic area are not tall and have long-term inhabited people. Therefore, they cannot be used in ancient architectural lighting.

The dominant method is to use the floodlights without outlines the building, not illuminating the corrugated floor, or the facade of the Chinese building. (With the residential overlooking the picture)

4. Because the residents at that time were not bureaucrats or Yinshishumen, so they had special hospitals.

The downside should give outstanding performance, make it a story node, and enhance the narrative of the scenic spot.

5, in order to reflect the life of the house, it is necessary to make internal lighting in the position of the tile.

6. There is a Western-style building in the center of the scenic spot. Its existence reflects the communication between Chengdu and Western society. It must be cautiously expressed, otherwise it will be rushed in style. (With Xiaoyanglou pictures)

7, street lights should be the focus of design. Its shape must be coordinated with the background of the times, the color temperature of the light source must be coordinated with the atmosphere of the environment, and the color of the surface of the lamp body must be coordinated with the architectural style. (with old pictures)

Third, the specific design

1, bird cage lights

The bird cage lamp is the type of light I designed for the main entrance of the Kuanzhai Alley Scenic Area. See the figure

When designing this type of lamp, my main idea is as follows: The lamp should be iconic and integrated with the environment, that is, it must reflect the life of the wide and narrow alleys from the form to the content, and let today's Chengdu people Feel familiar and willing to accept. Based on this idea, after reviewing a large amount of information and constantly understanding the environment, I identified the theme of the bird cage.

The design of the bird cage lamp revolves around the bird-raising habits of the Manchu Banner and the typical symbol of Chinese culture, the lantern. (with bird cage and lantern pictures)

Manchu Banner is good for raising birds. In history, the Manchu Bannerers of the Qing Dynasty used to be a special class of society. The man has enjoyed the lifelong stipend provided by the government since he was born. He naturally became a soldier in adulthood and fought for the country in wartime. The flag-bearer who lives in Chengdu has no war for a long time, and his daily life is nothing but leisurely, except for participating in some formal military training. Many flag people use the way of raising birds to send their days. This lifestyle has gradually affected the Han Chinese in Chengdu. There are still many people in Chengdu who still like to raise birds, bird watching and training birds. This constitutes the main content and main form of the "slow" and "leisure" life of the banner people in the wide and narrow alleys and the old Chengdu people and some modern Chengdu people. Bird cages are a symbol of life that most people are familiar with. Displaying this symbol properly and accurately in lighting fixtures will definitely cause memories and resonances of Chengdu people.

The bird cage lamp is similar in shape to the lantern. The lantern is the most typical outdoor lighting fixture in China for thousands of years. This form will be accepted by everyone affected by Chinese traditional culture. (with picture of bird cage lights)

This type of lamp has new ideas in the environment but is not exaggerated and unobtrusive. It blends with the environment of wide and narrow alleys, and it has become an indispensable part of the environment. Therefore, it has not only been highly recognized by the owners, but also has won the majority of tourists. Accept and like

reward.

2, corrugated lamp

This is a wall lamp used in many places in the scenic area. Because the alley is not wide, it also acts as a street light. Because of its classic shape and rich in Chinese culture, the lamp itself has become one of the most eye-catching sights in the area.

The design of this light type is inspired by my collection of Wu Youru Painting. "Wu Youru Painting Treasure" is a collection of personal albums published by Wu Youru, a painter of the late Qing Dynasty, who has published his own news essays from the "Declaration" and published in watermarks. The large amount of content in the album is reflected in the form of news maps. At the end of the 19th century, Shanghai was the real life state of Chinese cities. There were many news and pictures that recorded and reflected the lamps used for urban lighting. (see photo)

The impression of the wide and narrow alleys in the world is also in the 18th and 9th centuries, which is close to the style of the times reflected in Wu Youru's Paintings. Therefore, I think it is more appropriate to borrow the lamp type in Wu Youru Painting.

The reason why this lamp is classic is not only to grasp the characteristics of the era of the lamps, but also to carefully handle the "corrugated" part above the lamps. Because the top of the building of the wide and narrow alley is a traditional blue tile of one color, but it is far from the human eye. I am designing the light at all times to express the detailed performance of the "corrugated" structure and require the producer to be true and correct. The height required for installation should be within the scope of the human eye, so that the top of the house that the person in the scenic spot cannot see clearly can be seen. The structure is displayed in front of the tourists, which brings the distance between the tourists and the scenic spot. Therefore, it is very popular among tourists. Many tourists deliberately take pictures under the lamp to show their love. (With a tiled real picture)

3. Xiaoyang Building and Window Garden Lights

Xiaoyanglou is a charity hospital built by the French in 1938. It is a Gothic neoclassical building. It is at the central node of the entire scenic spot, and its success in lighting design will directly affect the success of the overall design, so I feel pressure.

It is a church hospital in history. The current format is a chocolate shop: there is a small square in front and back, and there is a small pool in the square in the north. The pool has small sculptures and traditional houses on both sides. The European architectural style of the building is different from the courtyard style of the entire scenic area.

Based on the above environmental factors, I feel that it has to be specially treated. First, it is necessary to appropriately break through the previously established constraints of not using floodlighting. Second, the lighting style should be coordinated with the architectural style, that is, there should be a European style. Third, the pool should be designed to make it a public square. Fourth, the illuminance should be strictly controlled so that the area is integrated with the entire scenic area in terms of illumination.

The specific lighting methods are as follows: First, because the windows and the room section of the building are specially shaped, I use a small floodlight to illuminate from the bottom to the top of the room, which can clearly express the architectural style by means of light and shadow. In addition, it can avoid glare interference to pedestrians, and the illumination is also controlled. Second, in the pool, low-pressure underwater lights are used to illuminate the white sculptures in the pool from the bottom of the pool. Through the lighting of these two places, the unique style of the area is basically expressed. Next, we will design the courtyard lights in the square.

The courtyard lights of the square should be clearly different in style from the bird cage lights and the corrugated lights. The former has a typical Chinese style from the shape to the inside. The lamp should have a typical European style in its shape to match the architectural style. Convergence, otherwise there will be obvious conflicts. Inspired by the garden lights used in the Chilean night market in the Shanghai concession at the end of the 19th century, I modified it by adding a layer of metal cutouts to the outside of the glass cover, while the hollowed out pattern was Chinese. The window pattern, in this way, the European appearance of the lamp realizes the coordination and unification with the architectural style, and the Chinese window pattern realizes the coordination and unification with the big environment style of the scenic spot, and finally realizes the best of both worlds. (with map)

4, the east entrance wall

The east entrance is the main population of the Kuanzhai Alley Scenic Area, where the owner has built a creative wall group (with map), and each side has an introduction to the different contents of the area. However, the texts and pictures introduced are not large, and reading during the day is acceptable. There is no special illumination at night to read.

There is no building around the wall group, and it stands on the ground. If you install any tangible luminaire around the wall for the purpose of reading it will destroy its daytime beauty, so I used a low-voltage low-power LED wall washer. The effect is good (see the real picture). It can be seen that the key to the success of the identification of the lighting effect is the degree of accuracy of the designer's understanding of the environment and the degree of coordination and integration of the expression techniques and technical means used, rather than the design failures and innovations.

5, door lighting design

Door performance in any architectural lighting design is a design focus. Although the gates of the courtyards in the Kuanzhai Alley Scenic Area are not tall, the taste of life is very strong. Therefore, when designing ideas, I want to use the simple but rich taste of life to express them.

6. Selection and design of internal penetration points

The whole scenic spot is a residential community. Many of the houses have a large area of tile decoration. It is not only a boundary between families, but also one of the channels for communication between families. It is a combination of closed and open family. . The tile allows the owner to observe and understand the external environment from the inside out, and also allows the neighbor to sense the in-house activities from the outside to the inside. Therefore, I chose several representative tiles for the interior lighting and strictly controlled the brightness. The light is transmitted from the inside out, as if the owner of the hospital is telling people about the life experiences that have been seen here.
