On January 18, the Penguin Aurora Box 1s, a collaborative product between Tencent Video and Skyworth Digital, was officially launched. This Internet set-top box features a cute and appealing design that quickly attracted a large number of users. Priced at 399 yuan, it falls into the mid-to-high-end category of TV boxes. As an upgraded version of the Skyworth Penguin Aurora Box, what improvements does the 1s bring, and how is the user experience? Let’s take a closer look at our editorial review.

The hardware interfaces of the box are mainly located on the top, including the power port, HDMI, USB, and AV ports. Since the 1s uses a flat design, it doesn’t include a wired network interface. The back of the device is equipped with a ring-shaped anti-slip mat, which provides excellent grip and stability.
Performance Parameters

During performance testing, the Penguin Aurora Box 1s scored 34,430 in the Security Bunny test, powered by a high-performance 64-bit A53 CPU and Mali-450 GPU. It supports smooth playback of 4K Blu-ray videos, 3D games, and offers enhanced image processing capabilities with support for 4K and HDR10.

Compared to other TV boxes, its performance is similar to the fourth-generation Lynx Box 3Pro and Haimeidi H7. However, it outperforms the Founder Box F5 by three times, making it a strong contender in terms of power and performance.
2. Data Transmission Test
For users who enjoy watching local high-definition content, USB port performance can significantly affect playback smoothness, especially with 4K videos. We tested the data transmission capability of the Penguin Aurora Box 1s.

We tested the transfer speed of a 1.1GB 4K HDR video across several devices. The Penguin Aurora Box 1s completed the task in just 45 seconds, the fastest among all tested models. The Haimeidi H7 took 47 seconds, the Lynx Box 3Pro took 53 seconds, and the previous generation Penguin Aurora Box took over a minute.
Compared to its predecessor, the 1s shows significant improvements, outperforming the fourth-gen Lynx Box 3Pro and Haimeidi H7. Real-world tests confirmed that it can smoothly play local 4K videos without any lag or stuttering.
3. Network Testing
Despite lacking a wired network interface and only supporting 2.4G WiFi, many users might worry about buffering during online streaming. Our real-world test showed that the Penguin Aurora Box 1s achieved the fastest 2.4G WiFi speed, reaching around 5MB/s, surpassing all other devices. It handles online videos and live streams smoothly without issues.

System UI and Video Experience

Equipped with 2GB of RAM, the Penguin Aurora Box 1s offers a noticeable performance boost over its predecessor. It matches the level of the fourth-gen Haimeidi H7 and lacks boot ads, providing a smoother user experience.

The user interface is designed with a waterfall flow layout, offering an intuitive and visually engaging experience. Users can easily navigate through 21 channel categories, including movies, TV shows, variety programs, children's content, sports, music, and more. The AI voice assistant adds a unique and convenient way to interact with the system.

The top navigation bar allows quick access to desired channels, eliminating the need to scroll through each one individually. Additionally, the quick switch feature lets users change channels directly from the list page, improving efficiency.

In ultra HD video tests, the Penguin Aurora Box 1s showcased impressive 4K clarity. From cityscapes to details like rooftops, moving vehicles, and building textures, everything was clearly visible without any distortion or lag.

When playing 4K and H.265 videos, the 1s handled most files smoothly. Only one 4K movie experienced minor stuttering, but it still supported HEVC decoding and played 10-bit color videos with great detail and smooth gradients.

The box also performed well with different bit rate videos, ensuring smooth playback regardless of the file size. Higher bit rates mean better quality, as they capture more detailed information per second, resulting in clearer visuals.
Note: Video bit rate directly affects quality. A higher bit rate means more data processed per second, leading to a more accurate and detailed video output.
