At one moment, Yu Liang - Why didn't I choose Airpods but chose Beats X?

I got the call at the end of May and married my wife, moving to Guangzhou to start a business. Time has flown by so quickly, and soon it’ll be my wife's birthday. What could be a better gift? I couldn’t help but fall into deep thought…

LZ is a seasoned console gamer and a big fan of all sorts of digital products. Before, when his wife showed interest in an Xbox 360 + Kinect suit ("Really?"), she ended up not being very interested in video games. After purchasing the 360, it sat gathering dust in our South African home. My wife is more into cute, girly things—bags, jewelry, and the like. I was worried about getting something inappropriate, so I decided to go with what I know best—digital products!

Reasons for Purchase:

I’ve always been a strong advocate for Apple products for a very straightforward reason: my fingers are thick, and the earlier iPhones’ screens were too narrow for comfortable typing. Back then, my then-girlfriend (now wife) chose the iPhone 5, and seeing how everyone around us was raving about Apple products, I eventually joined the bandwagon. Now, my wife and I have iPhones 7 and 7 Plus, and the entire family has become Apple enthusiasts. We own two MBAs, an iPad, two iPod Classics, an iPod Shuffle, and countless Apple products like the Apple Watch. I’m so accustomed to the Apple ecosystem that it’s hard to imagine using anything else.

Given this, the product choice was pretty much locked into the Apple ecosystem. For phones, we already have the latest models, and for laptops, we each have a MacBook Air 128GB. Both are sufficient for our work needs. We also both have iPad minis for reading, which serve their purpose well. The final decision came down to accessories.

Due to our collection of iPhones and iPods, we had plenty of white earphones—earbuds and earpods alike. My wife uses them more than I do (short version: when our headphones get mixed up, I insist that the newer ones are mine). She listens to a ton of music—a 1TB hard drive is packed with songs! She’s listened to over 2,800 albums. Recently, she’s gotten into home aerobics. While jogging at the gym, she wears a wired headset. A Bluetooth sports headset seemed perfect for her.

Given our choices, the candidates narrowed down to the Beats X and Apple AirPods.

Beats X Bluetooth Wireless In-Ear Headphones, Sports Headphones, Mobile Phone Headphones With Michael Call Black, 1188 RMB, available on Jingdong

AirPods Wireless Bluetooth Headset for iPhone 7P, iOS10 Series, 1488 RMB, available on Jingdong

Both products use the Apple W1 chip, allowing seamless pairing with Apple devices and quick connectivity. I’ll share my experience with these later. From a design perspective, they’re completely different: Beats X resembles traditional sports headphones with slight improvements; AirPods are revolutionary, removing the headphone cable entirely. Design preferences aside, I leaned towards Beats X since I already have many earpods. After confirming my choice, I compared prices. Initially, I planned to order from overseas through Jingdong, but when I saw Aunt Zhang’s Amazon Prime deal, I immediately switched to Amazon! I ordered, cut my hands, and got a great deal!

Appearance Gallery:

Amazon Logistics is fantastic, delivering the next day. Upon opening, I found a non-woven bag containing the Beats X. While the packaging wasn’t flashy, it felt premium.

Since my wife’s iPhone 7 is white, I went for the white Beats X as well.

It looks great!

After Beats was acquired by Apple, the packaging style became more Apple-like, complete with this one-time seal.

The back lists basic features.

Dangdang Dangdang! Here’s the unveiling! Removing the transparent cover reveals the product, with a layered Apple-style packaging design. The first layer is the headset, the second layer is the packaging.

Three interchangeable ear tips, including four sets of bodies and a side wing to enhance wearing stability (I don’t know what this thing is called, but it works!). The texture of these accessories is excellent!

The instructions are also Apple-style thick. The key point is the faith.

In turn, the included headset and charging cable can be charged directly with an Apple mobile phone charger. Although the headset package is silicone, the texture is very good!

Take a look at the headphone body!

This headset has a unique design: when not in use, the back of the earpiece can be snapped together and hung around the neck, preventing the cables from tangling.

The design of the Beats X is sure to appeal to those with obsessive-compulsive tendencies—the power button and charging port are symmetrical...

The texture of the remote control is excellent, feeling a bit stiff, but ensuring it won't be accidentally pressed.

The part worn around the neck is said to be made of memory metal. It’s coated to be skin-friendly, flexible, and elastic, making it very comfortable! You can see from the picture that the headset logo is slightly off. I asked my wife if she wanted to replace it, but she was touched and refused. Clearly, she loves the Beats X!

Experience Feelings:

In terms of sound quality, though I’m no audiophile, I have a few thoughts. We previously used earpods, and the upgrade to Beats X is significant. Sound insulation isn’t bad. The bass is strong and firm, while the highs are a highlight—transparent, bright, and focused. Compared to its appearance, the sound quality is impressive. I hadn’t used Beats headphones before, but I must say the low frequencies aren’t overly emphasized. At this price point, it’s a worthwhile investment.

To Sum Up:

The main reasons for choosing the Beats X are as follows, with brackets corresponding to my specific needs:

1. Bluetooth connectivity, lightweight (no cable hassle, more convenient for sports).

2. More appealing design (my wife says so), the neckband type prevents loss (my wife’s iPhone 6 has cracked screens three times; if it were AirPods, I’m sure she’d lose them).

3. Multi-device switching (can be used with mobile and computers).

4. Gift of multiple ear tips allows adjustment for better sound insulation (though not as good as noise-canceling headphones), while AirPods only come in one size—thankfully, inappropriate to hang on a fish.

5. Fast charging is an absolute game-changer! Charge for five minutes, play for two hours! (Though the use case might be limited, having this feature feels reassuring).

One more important reason I didn’t choose AirPods: when I’m working, I like to wear one earbud. AirPods automatically pause music in this state… I know Apple probably has a fix, but it’s still annoying.
