The release of Apple’s iPhone X, marking its 10th anniversary, is expected to drive facial recognition technology adoption across other brands like Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi. This shift could open up new opportunities for companies such as Qualcomm and the Wonder Technologies camp. Additionally, TSMC, which is involved in manufacturing 3D sensor chips, and Da-Liguang, a key lens manufacturer, may also benefit from this trend.
Qualcomm and Wonder Technologies have developed a 3D sensing product called "SLiM," designed specifically for facial recognition. It offers a complete 3D camera module solution and is scheduled to enter mass production in the first quarter of next year. This timeline suggests that the facial recognition feature will be widely available by the middle of the year. Apple chose to eliminate the traditional fingerprint ID on the iPhone X due to the lack of mature under-display fingerprint technology, instead introducing Face ID, which relies heavily on 3D sensing capabilities.
If pre-orders for the iPhone X begin at the end of October, it could trigger a wave of new products from non-Apple brands, further boosting demand for facial recognition technology. From a supply chain perspective, Qualcomm and the Wonder Technologies camp are likely to become top choices for these manufacturers. Qualcomm’s SLiM solution, developed in collaboration with Qijing, is being produced by TSMC. It combines Qualcomm’s advanced computer vision architecture and algorithms with Wonder’s wafer-level optics, sensing, driver ICs, and modules, offering high-resolution depth sensing in both indoor and outdoor settings.
Qualcomm is optimistic about expanding facial recognition beyond smartphones into applications such as cars, drones, and smart monitors. As the market evolves, the integration of 3D sensing technology is set to redefine user interaction and security in the tech industry.
