Cable TV is quickly abandoned: the end of an era?

Cable TV is no longer in sync with today's mobile internet lifestyle. It's completely understandable why many people don't like it—there are so many ways to relax these days. According to a recent report by the BBC, a growing number of consumers in North America have completely cut the cord. A survey of 1,200 American households revealed that only 40% of respondents would consider subscribing to traditional cable TV. Younger generations, in particular, are turning away from it.
Do you still watch cable TV? Further data shows that only 31% of people aged 18–29 watch cable TV, while the percentage increases with age: 52% for those aged 30–49, 70% for 50–64, and a striking 84% for those over 65. This trend clearly shows that as people grow older, their reliance on cable TV increases.
Only 18% of young people aged 18 to 29 watch cable TV. This isn’t just an issue abroad. In China, more and more users are getting frustrated with traditional cable TV. By the end of Q2 this year, the number of digital cable TV subscribers dropped below 160 million for the first time, reaching 159.93 million. Meanwhile, services like IPTV and OTT have been gaining traction, significantly impacting the growth of cable TV users. The rise of IPTV has been driven largely by telecom giants such as China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom. By 2016, these three companies had already reached 100 million TV users, a number that took CATV nearly 45 years to build up to 260 million. Faced with this challenge, the broadcasting authorities have started exploring new business models and innovative revenue streams, but so far, the results have been limited. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, it’s clear that cable TV is struggling to keep up with the fast-paced, on-demand world we live in.
