Cable TV is quickly abandoned: the end of an era?

Cable TV is no longer in sync with today's mobile internet lifestyle. It's completely understandable why many people don't like it anymore, given the countless ways to relax and entertain oneself these days. According to a recent BBC report, a growing number of consumers in North America have completely cut the cord and stopped using traditional cable TV. A survey of 1,200 American consumers found that only 40% are still considering a cable subscription. Younger generations, in particular, seem to be turning away from it. ![Image: Cable TV decline](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/e1/e1/0f/c23180ba0148db3d48698c08d3.jpg) **Do you still watch cable TV?** Further data from the same study shows a clear age-based trend. Only 31% of people aged 18–29 watch cable TV, while the percentage rises to 52% among those aged 30–49, 70% for those aged 50–64, and as high as 84% for those over 65. This indicates that cable TV remains more popular among older demographics. ![Image: Young people and cable TV](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/29/38/f4/9a34d281a19c45e9645354fdd4.jpg) **Only 18% of young people aged 18–29 watch cable TV** This trend isn’t just limited to the U.S. In China, cable TV is also facing increasing dissatisfaction. At the end of the second quarter of this year, the number of digital cable TV subscribers dropped below 160 million for the first time, reaching 159.93 million. Meanwhile, services like IPTV and OTT are rapidly gaining ground, significantly impacting the growth of traditional cable TV. The rise of IPTV has been driven largely by telecom giants such as China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom. By 2016, these companies had already accumulated 100 million TV users, a feat that took CATV nearly 45 years to reach 260 million. This rapid shift has made the broadcasting authorities aware of the crisis, prompting them to explore new business models and innovative revenue streams. However, so far, the results have been minimal. As streaming continues to evolve and user habits change, the future of cable TV looks uncertain. Whether it can adapt or fade into history remains to be seen.
