Communication and lighting dual-use, the United States launched the first Li-Fi LED lighting panel

With the rapid advancement of mobile networks and smart devices, along with the expansion of related services, consumers are increasingly demanding higher network capacity and faster speeds. This has led to the rise of optical communication technology. Currently, fiber optics is the most widely used form of optical communication, utilizing LEDs or laser diodes (LDs) as transmitters. Now, a new generation of optical communication is emerging—Li-Fi technology. Unlike traditional Wi-Fi, which uses radio waves, Li-Fi leverages visible light, infrared, or near-ultraviolet light as its transmission medium. It combines lighting and communication in one system, making it a promising solution for smart homes in the future. Compared to Wi-Fi, Li-Fi offers faster data transfer rates and is immune to electromagnetic interference, making it more secure and efficient. At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in the United States, Li-Fi made a major breakthrough. The U.S. company VLNComm introduced the first Li-Fi LED lighting panel called "LumiNex" and showcased it at the event. This innovative panel can deliver a download speed of 108 Mbps and, when paired with the "LumiStick," achieves an upload speed of 253 Mbps. Its coverage area spans up to 516 square feet. It uses standard white LEDs and supports 15-digit user access online. Professor Noshad, CEO of VLNComm, described this development as both progressive and revolutionary. As the technology matures, Li-Fi could offer enhanced security and more available spectrum, potentially complementing or even replacing Wi-Fi in the future. Although Li-Fi relies on light, which cannot pass through walls, its coverage from a single light source is limited. However, this also means it is less susceptible to interference or eavesdropping, offering greater security than Wi-Fi. Li-Fi holds significant potential for growth in various sectors, including supermarkets, hospitals, and even deep-sea sensors. As the demand for high-speed, secure, and reliable connectivity continues to grow, Li-Fi may soon become a key player in the next generation of wireless communication.
