With the rapid advancement of mobile networks and smart devices, along with the growing demand for faster and more reliable connectivity, optical communication has emerged as a promising solution. Currently, fiber optics is the most widely used technology in this field, utilizing LEDs or laser diodes (LDs) as light sources for data transmission.
Now, a new era of optical communication is taking shape—Li-Fi technology. Unlike traditional Wi-Fi, which relies on radio waves, Li-Fi uses visible light, such as LED lights, infrared, or near-ultraviolet light, to transmit data. This innovative approach not only supports high-speed internet but also integrates seamlessly with lighting systems, making it an ideal candidate for future smart homes and environments.
At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the U.S., Li-Fi made a significant breakthrough. A U.S.-based company, VLNComm, unveiled the first Li-Fi-enabled LED lighting panel called "LumiNex." The device was showcased at the event, highlighting its potential to revolutionize home and commercial connectivity.
The LumiNex panel offers a download speed of 108 Mbps and can be paired with a "LumiStick" device that provides an upload speed of 253 Mbps. It covers an area of up to 516 square feet and uses standard white LEDs, supporting up to 15 users simultaneously. According to Professor Noshad, CEO of VLNComm, this development marks a major step forward in the evolution of Li-Fi. As the technology matures, it could offer enhanced security, efficient use of the spectrum, and potentially complement or even replace Wi-Fi in the future.
Despite its limitations, such as the fact that light cannot pass through walls and coverage per unit is limited, Li-Fi offers superior security compared to Wi-Fi, as it is less susceptible to interference or eavesdropping. Its applications are expanding into areas like hypermarkets, hospitals, and even deep-sea sensors, where secure and reliable communication is critical. With continued innovation, Li-Fi is poised to become a key player in the next generation of wireless communication.
