An inductor is a passive electronic component that stores electrical energy in the form of a magnetic field. It is typically made by winding a conducting wire into a coil. When an electric current flows through this coil, it generates a magnetic field around it. The direction of the magnetic field follows the right-hand rule, where if you point your thumb in the direction of the current, your fingers curl in the direction of the magnetic field.
The inductance value depends on several factors, including the number of turns in the coil, the cross-sectional area of the coil, and the material of the core. More turns mean a stronger magnetic field, as does increasing the cross-sectional area or using a magnetic core, such as iron or ferrite, which enhances the magnetic flux.
When alternating current (AC) passes through an inductor, the changing magnetic field induces a voltage that opposes the change in current. This phenomenon is known as inductive reactance. For example, when the current increases, the inductor produces a voltage that tries to reduce the increase, and when the current decreases, it generates a voltage that attempts to maintain the flow. This opposition makes inductors effective at blocking AC while allowing DC to pass through.
If the direction of the current is suddenly reversed, the inductor creates a reverse voltage that can prevent the current from flowing immediately. This behavior is especially noticeable in circuits with rapid changes in current, like in power supplies or motor control systems.
Direct current (DC), on the other hand, does not change over time, so no opposing voltage is induced. As a result, inductors allow DC to pass with minimal resistance, making them useful for filtering out AC noise in DC circuits.

Inductors are widely used in various applications, such as power supplies, filters, and radio frequency circuits. Understanding their behavior helps engineers design more efficient and stable electronic systems.
