For example, blockchain can be used to manage and secure user authentication data. MIT’s CertCoin project introduced a blockchain-based public key infrastructure, replacing traditional central authentication methods. Similarly, Ukrainian company Ukroboronprom, in partnership with REMME, has leveraged blockchain to prevent identity theft through secure authentication protocols.
Blockchain also enhances data security by ensuring confidentiality and integrity. GuardTime, a leading blockchain company, has been protecting Estonia’s medical records using blockchain technology. The U.S. Department of Defense is also exploring similar approaches for military data protection.
In terms of DDoS prevention, startups like Nebulis are developing blockchain-based domain name systems, allowing only authorized users to manage domains. Other companies like Blockstack and MaidSafe are using decentralized web technologies to reduce reliance on third-party servers and databases, effectively mitigating DDoS threats.
Moreover, blockchain can significantly improve IoT security. Through smart contracts, devices can authenticate access and detect anomalies. For instance, during the Mirai botnet attack in 2016, millions of IoT devices were hijacked, causing widespread network outages. In a blockchain environment, compromised nodes can be quickly identified and isolated, preventing further damage.
As more governments and enterprises recognize the value of blockchain, it’s becoming a powerful tool in the fight against cyber threats. However, the technology is still evolving, and there are ongoing challenges in terms of scalability, regulation, and security.
