ROHM has developed the industry's smallest level of small and light two-color SMD LED "SML-D22MUW" to help multi-color and thinner display panels for industrial equipment and consumer electronics

ROHM, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, has recently introduced the world's smallest 1608-size (1.6x0.8mm) two-color Surface Mount Device (SMD) LED, the "SML-D22MUW." This innovative product is designed to enhance multi-color displays in digital components for industrial equipment and consumer electronics. The newly developed SML-D22MUW maintains the same compact dimensions as standard monochrome SMD LEDs, measuring just 1.6x0.8mm. This compact design integrates both red and green SMD LEDs within the same package, effectively saving space while enabling multi-color displays. Compared to conventional two-color products (1.5x1.3mm), this new LED reduces the volume by 35%, contributing significantly to the slimming down of display panels. To ensure high reliability, the SML-D22MUW incorporates measures to prevent solder intrusion during the reflow soldering process. These protective features block solder from penetrating the resin, thereby eliminating potential issues caused by short circuits and enhancing the overall reliability of the product. This product became available for purchase in June 2017 at a sample price of 50 yen per unit (excluding tax) via platforms like AMYYA360 and RightIC. Mass production is expected to reach three million units per month starting August 2017. The initial production process takes place at ROHM’s headquarters in Kyoto City, while subsequent processes are handled by ROHM Semiconductor (China) Co., Ltd. in China and ROHM-Wako Electronics (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia. Looking ahead, ROHM remains committed to advancing the development of compact and lightweight LEDs, continually expanding its product lineup to meet the evolving demands of modern electronics. In recent years, there has been a growing trend toward using surface mount LEDs in digital displays for industrial equipment and consumer electronics. Traditionally, these displays relied on monochrome LEDs, but the need for more vivid color changes to indicate abnormal states has surged. To achieve such color variations, two separate LEDs were previously required, resulting in larger sizes and higher development costs compared to monochrome options. The SML-D22MUW addresses these challenges by integrating both red and green LEDs into a single compact package. This not only simplifies the design process but also significantly reduces the overall footprint of the display components. The 1.2x0.8mm light-emitting area supports excellent color mixing, allowing the LED to produce not only pure red and green but also intermediate hues. For added reliability, the SML-D22MUW employs solder-resist barriers prior to gold plating. These barriers effectively block solder from entering the resin, preventing short circuits and ensuring consistent performance over time. Additionally, the package features a back electrode that facilitates ultra-narrow mounting, enabling sharper and more precise displays in applications such as dot matrices. These advancements make the SML-D22MUW an ideal solution for modern electronic devices requiring efficient, reliable, and visually appealing displays.
