ROHM, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, has introduced the world's smallest 1608-size (1.6 x 0.8 mm) two-color SMD LED, the "SML-D22MUW." This innovative product is designed to enhance the multi-color display capabilities of digital components in industrial equipment and consumer electronics.
Unlike traditional monochrome LEDs, the SML-D22MUW integrates both red and green SMD LEDs within the same compact 1.6 x 0.8 mm package, offering significant space savings while enabling vivid multi-color displays. Compared to earlier two-color models (1.5 x 1.3 mm), this new LED reduces the volume by 35%, paving the way for thinner and more efficient display panels.
To ensure durability and reliability, ROHM has implemented advanced measures to prevent solder intrusion during the reflow soldering process. These precautions safeguard against potential issues caused by solder entering the resin, thereby enhancing the overall reliability of the product.
The SML-D22MUW became available for sampling in June 2017 at a price of 50 yen per unit (excluding tax). It can be purchased online via platforms like AMYYA360 and RightIC. Mass production is set to begin in August 2017, with an initial monthly output target of three million units. ROHM's headquarters in Kyoto City will handle the initial production stages, while subsequent processes will be carried out by ROHM Semiconductor (China) Co., Ltd. in China and ROHM-Wako Electronics (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia.
