Smart speaker is expected to become the next "entry-level" killer product

In recent years, the internet industry has seen rapid advancements, with “intelligence” becoming a buzzword in tech circles. Artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing are driving innovations, allowing smart voice assistants to break free from their smartphone confines and explore new hardware platforms. This shift has drawn major tech giants to focus their attention on smart speakers. Unlike traditional speakers, smart speakers are essentially "smart home managers" powered by AI technology. They facilitate voice interactions and serve as the entry point for smart home systems. As a key application of AI, smart homes hold immense potential for shaping future lifestyles, making smart speakers a highly sought-after product. One notable player in this space is DingDong, whose smart speakers debuted at the AWE2017 exhibition. DingDong allows users to control home appliances via voice commands and integrates seamlessly with numerous smart devices. It also features a smart plug, enabling older appliances to become smart instantly. Beyond home management, DingDong offers additional services like shopping, courier updates, laundry assistance, encyclopedic knowledge, and radio streaming. As early as 2016, smart home products were gaining significant traction at various trade shows. These products transitioned from mobile phone-controlled setups to interactive human-computer interfaces, offering more sophisticated control methods. The integration of AI with smart homes creates diverse interaction modes, enhancing the intelligence and user-friendliness of household products. Looking ahead, smart homes will permeate every aspect of daily life, leading us into a new era of smart living. User demand is growing, and smart products are evolving in multiple directions. Their applications will extend beyond security and environmental enhancement to include health monitoring, energy efficiency, and sustainability. With AI technology maturing, the smart home industry is poised to enter a new phase, drawing the attention of internet giants eager to capitalize on the smart audio market. The race among competitors is heating up. Similar to how WeChat and Weibo dominated the app scene in the mobile internet era, smart speakers are seen as the gateway to the AI age. Currently, over 49 companies in China, including BAT, JD.com, Xiaomi, and Lenovo, have joined the fray. Even telecom operators are getting involved. On July 5th, Alibaba’s Artificial Intelligence Lab unveiled the $499 Tmall Genie X1, marking the company’s entry into consumer-grade AI products. Meanwhile, Baidu introduced its DuerOS open platform, likening it to Android in the AI era. Tencent also announced its smart speaker, “Ear,” set for release later this year. Upstream, chip manufacturers are also joining the fray. Qualcomm launched a smart audio platform last month, providing developers with advanced tools to accelerate smart speaker creation. Intel and MediaTek are also developing smart speaker solutions, leveraging their expertise in AI and IoT. Qualcomm, Intel, and MediaTek are clearly eyeing the smart speaker market, driven by rising consumer interest. Will smart speakers become the next "killer" product after smartphones, igniting consumer demand? Amazon’s Echo smart speaker, launched in November 2014, has been a massive success. In Q1 2017, Echo accounted for 70.6% of the U.S. voice assistant market, highlighting its popularity. Globally, smart speaker shipments are projected to rise tenfold from 5.9 million units in 2016 to 55 million units by 2022, reaching a market value of $5.5 billion. The smart speaker market is becoming increasingly competitive, with many predicting it as the next "entry-level" product to drive consumer demand.
