Analogico's new 4-channel LED driver provides greater efficiency

AnalogicTech has announced two new 4-channel, charge-pump LED drivers, the AAT3104 and AAT3195, for larger-screen LCD displays in simplified handsets and portable systems. In a compact 2 x 2.1mm package, these devices provide designers with 16-step, 32-step or pulse-width modulation (PWM) current control in a space-saving footprint. Compared to competing solutions, the AAT3104 and AAT3195 drives use high-efficiency charge pumps in 1x and 2x modes, reducing the number of external components by up to 25%. To provide uniform brightness and perfect matching between adjacent LEDs, the AAT3104 provides a universal current sink for common anode configurations, while the AAT3195 supports a common source for common cathode structures.

When engineers add new features to entry-level phones or other portable systems, they typically integrate larger displays into their designs, says Phil Dewsbury, director of product line at AnalogicTech. By adding the required constant current output voltage to the forward biased LED and controlling and setting the current required for the common anode and common cathode structure with 4 LEDs, the new line of LED driver products is available. Both chips offer design flexibility for portable system designers in space-saving packages, providing higher power efficiency, reduced component count and increased current control options.

Multiple interface selection

The AAT3104 is a current source LED driver that can deliver up to 30mA per 4 LEDs. Charge-based pumping devices automatically switch between 1x and 2x modes to maximize efficiency and optimize LED current accuracy and matching. LED output current accuracy is +/- 10%. LED output current matching is +/- 3%.

The AAT3104 operates at a switching frequency of 1 MHz and is available in two versions of the 16-step (AAT3104-1) or 32-step (AAT3104-2) LED brightness control via the Analogic patented single-wire S2Cwire interface. The PWM version of the AAT3105 will be available soon.

For LEDs with a common cathode structure, the AAT3195 provides a charge pump-based current source LED driver for 4-channel applications. Similar to the AAT3104, the AAT3195 can deliver up to 30mA each for up to 4 LEDs. The AAT3195 also automatically switches between 1x and 2x modes to ensure maximum efficiency, current accuracy and matching. LED output current accuracy is +/- 10% and LED output current matching is +/- 3%.

The AAT3195 operates with a switching frequency of 1 MHz and is available in three versions via different interfaces. The AAT3195-1 provides 32-step regulated 30mA current through the S2Cwire interface. The AAT3195-2 uses the S2Cwire interface to support 32-step 20mA current. The AAT3195-3 has a PWM interface.

Both drivers feature automatic soft-start, a low-power shutdown mode that saves power and built-in temperature protection.

Price and availability

The AAT3104 and AAT3195 are rated for operation from -40o C to +85o C. They are available in a 2 x 2.1mm, 10-pin SC70JW package. The AAT3104 is priced at $0.87 each in quantities of 1,000 and the AAT3195 is priced at $0.87 each in quantities of 1,000.
