US Department of Energy Solid State Lighting Strategy Analysis

The US Department of Energy and its partners are working to accelerate the development of solid-state lighting, a key emerging technology that is expected to fundamentally change the future of lighting. According to the US Department of Energy, no other lighting technology is available to the Department of Energy and the entire United States. Energy and environmental protection provide such a huge potential.

First, the combination strategy of solid-state lighting

The US Department of Energy has made a long-term commitment to promoting the development of energy efficient white light sources in the general lighting market. Solid-state lighting is a brand-new lighting technology that is fundamentally different from today's people. Its unique attributes require a set of relevant and advanced guiding techniques to enable it to move smoothly from the laboratory to the market. In this regard, the US Department of Energy has developed a comprehensive national strategy, including basic energy science, core technology research, product development, commercialization support, standards development, and SSL partnerships, each of which is interrelated to enable solid-state lighting to expand into the market. (figure 1).

Second, solid-state lighting strategy analysis

Below, we will detail the key parts of the US Department of Energy's solid-state lighting portfolio strategy.

[1] Basic Energy Science

The Basic Energy Science Program, implemented under the management of the US Department of Energy's Science Office, is dedicated to promoting basic research on the understanding and utilization of material properties, and to provide correct guidance for applied research and technology development in the future. Project results often include multiple application areas, and SSL is one of them.

[2] Core technology research

Through a series of ongoing interactive workshops, the US Department of Energy and its SSL partners have worked together to improve the R&D process and ensure that the DOE has an appropriate timeline for funding research projects, which will effectively improve the introduction of SSL technology to the market. Efficiency and speed. Core technology research is implemented by academia, national laboratories, and research institutions, as well as all relevant entities that help to understand and work for an applied research topic. The purpose of these projects is to fill technical gaps, provide favorable knowledge or data, and advance the level of knowledge to the next level.

[3] Product Development

Mainly by industry, systematically using the knowledge base or applied research obtained to develop and improve commercially viable materials, equipment or systems. Laboratory testing is performed on product prototypes; feedback data is used to improve prototyping. In addition to technical work, market and financial research can ensure a smooth transition from model to market.

[4] Business support

To ensure that the US Department of Energy invests in the core technology research and product development of SSL technology commercialization, the Department of Energy has developed a national strategy to guide SSL into the general lighting market. This strategy has enabled the Department of Energy to participate in almost every aspect of SSL R&D and has worked closely with partners in the SSL industry such as the research community, standards development teams, and energy efficiency organizations. These collaborations enable the Department of Energy to implement the following activities in all aspects:

☆-Implementing ENERGYSTAR Specially Designated SSL Technology and Products

☆-SSL lighting device and system design competition

☆-SSL technical issues, test procedures and standard technical information resources

☆-Common commercial SSL lighting product testing

☆-Coordination and Utilities, Regional and National Market Transformation Plan

☆- Accept and process technology demonstrations, demonstrate high-performance products, commercial and residential applications, and provide performance and cost-effective experience and real-world data

☆- Develop a procurement plan to encourage high-volume purchase of high-performance products

[5] Standard development

Develop national standards and evaluation systems for new products. All companies must test their products with the same rating method, allowing consumers to compare products from different manufacturers. The Department of Energy works closely with industry and standards development organizations to lead, support and accelerate the development of standards and technical assistance.

[6]SSL partnership

The SSL partnership supports the Department of Energy's SSL portfolio activities. The Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Energy and the Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance was signed in February 2005, which details the Department of Energy's SSL product manufacturing and commercialization strategy. The partnership provides important inputs to the Department of Energy's research priorities, the Department of Energy's discretion, and recommendations and project reviews to provide technical expertise. In addition, the partnership accelerates the promotion of SSL technology by:

☆-Communication of SSL plan results

☆-Encourage development standards and regulations

☆-Demonstration project to promote SSL technology for general lighting applications

☆-Support the market-oriented plan voluntarily advocated by the Ministry of Energy

Third, the US Department of Energy's solid-state lighting funding opportunities

The Department of Energy supports the research and development of promising solid-state lighting technologies and the establishment of demonstration projects. As a technology that is constantly maturing, a variety of different funding mechanisms can support its development. The selection of SSL research partners and projects is based on factors such as energy saving potential and likelihood of success, and is in line with the SSL R&D program.

The US Department of Energy's funding mechanisms for solid-state lighting initiatives include:

☆-Basic research: The Ministry of Energy's solid-state lighting research and development plan is the first. Grants supporting basic energy research are provided by the Ministry of Energy Science Office through an annual tender.

☆-Energy/NETL's SSL core technology and product development: The SSL core technology research project focuses on promoting technical knowledge and basic research related to SSL general lighting applications. SSL product development projects seek to develop and improve commercially viable materials, equipment or systems.

☆-Energy/NETL's SSL market-based activities: including the Department of Energy's SSL technology information network, technology demonstrations, and other market-based initiatives.

☆ - Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR): Designed to increase the participation of small businesses in federal R&D. Support the first phase of the annual competition between small businesses (feasible innovation concept) and the second phase (main research or research and development) awards, including solid-state lighting related topics.
